back from hawaii now.. sadly. hawaii was awesome... much much too beautiful. and the first day i get back it's 95 degrees in socal, and i can see that beloved brown line of haze pollution hanging on the horizon from the griffith observatory. so different from the island, but that's okay. there's a certain feel to an LA summer that i never really notice until it's been winter and there's that one day i open the window at sunset and breathe in and think, hey summer's coming up, i kinda missed it.

so pretty much on vacation i didn't get any kind of work done at all (who would do work in hawaii?) but watched a lot of armin van buuren interview videos and logic pro how to's and cool/funny youtube videos.

i also found some amazing music making machines... i need to get my hands on one of these

so it's been raining non stop - sometimes torrentially with 50+mph winds - over in LA / socal area since last night, and everything is getting flooded. the LA marathon was today too! people still ran it and some of them got hypothermia. people are crazy. but good job on the dedication.

i'm glad i don't have to go out. i feel like people that live in socal don't realize how pampered they are with the weather, and are generally very ill prepared for any type of natural disaster. especially giant earthquakes and severe storms. i think everyone should make earthquake go bags. but maybe that's just me being paranoid. i mean, after all there have been big quakes going around the ring of fire (which the US west coast is also on) and we're overdue about 100 years for one of our own. yayy. noo

anyway i said i would post up some audio sketches but am wondering how to do that on blogger when they don't offer an option to upload .mp3...

what's happening i'm sure everyone knows and is thinking the same thing, but it's so awful i have a hard time believing it's real. like watching the day after tomorrow, only it makes sense and doesn't have a corny happy ending (or maybe it can) and jake gyllenhaal isn't the main character. i feel bad for having food and hot showers and comfortable home and car etc. etc. while people over there are going hungry and cold and being miserable. the worst part is there's nothing really to do but sit and watch and wait. i really hope things turn out ok. or at least as close to ok as they can get.

so i started working this week at my graphic designer full time job... 9-6 is difficult.

driving to the local park and eating lunch by myself at a picnic table isn't that fun.. but at least i get 1 hr of sunlight every day.

last week was the art center interview! it went pretty well i think, and the whole place was verrry impressive. ahh the projects they get to work on are greattttttt.

that's all i have to say for now.. kinda tired.. shame that i can't stay up till 4am anymore and get some things done :(

i'm stuck in jury duty for the next week. greatttttttttt. and while i sit in the panel listening to formalities i start thinking about my upcoming job and art center interview, and a very disturbing thought, did i lose the ability to draw things like i used to? i really hope not. but it's not looking too good right now... for some reason the lines just don't flow like they used to. maybe i'm still being impatient with myself. but it's frustrating like nothing else.. kind of like the feeling if you were a sprint runner all your life and one day you realized you could only jog, but you don't really know why..

maybe (hopefully not) it's a byproduct of me changing into more of a design/hybrid thinker than just an illustrator like i used to be. hopefully not though. lasjdhflksjdhf

i'll be bringing out the reference pictures again that have been stored away for years.. and sadly my prized animals drawing book is missing!! i've had that since i was a little kid and it helped so much :( i hope it's just in public storage or something.

but currently i'm working on sound.. more specifically, a new, less XTREME and embarrassing vocal trance type of music with yours truly doing the vocals. i haven't gotten much down yet except the basics but it's still something. after the sound will come an accompanying piece made in after effects/processing (if i can eventually learn those programs), so look out for that in maybe......... a month or so. (i'll probably update sooner than that though hah)

today was the last day of my temp job at the printing place. kinda sad, it ended up being pretty nice and was easy with good pay. but i guess things must move on. i have a week off before i start the other thing for 3 months... hopefully that week isn't ruined by having to go in for jury duty ugh. my interview for art center is going to be sometime at the end of next week too...!

i discovered some great things on the internet lately.

one is a bunch of awesome PBS / NOVA documentaries on youtube. there are seriously lots of them dealing with all different super interesting fields, but this one stuck out more for me:

better news, i found a temp job at a print shop that pays pretty nicely so that's a good placeholder while i start applying to more things with my updated site/portfolio. gonna try for the disney imagineering internships offered in the summer.. disney must be well acquainted with my name by now.

ok.. getting over my UC laziness has been hard. realllly hard. but somehow i'm managing. of course i'm set back a lot on finishing, but isn't that always the case with these kinds of things? i still have the bulk of the digital part to do on the portfolio but all the concepts/line drawings/pre-coloring things have been done. ALL OF THEM!!! i feel pretty accomplished even though i still have a lot hanging over my head.

this is the last week to work on things. every day has to count...

what i have left:

+ digitizing the synesthesia project, motor horse, rorschach thing

+ compose a few shorts in logic

+ put together some samples of the graphic novel i'm working on into a synopsis PDF

+ gather previous works/polish them up if needed to be included in the portfolio

+ finish application/essays

+ pick up ELAC transcripts

+++ meet with art center counselor

not bad i guess. still a lot of work but it's more "busy work" and shouldn't take too much time... as long as i can keep working and stop getting distracted.

on another note, i just watched the banksy film "exit through the gift shop." totally not what i was expecting, but in a good way. very interesting documentary and very hilarious message. art collectors are suckers.

took a tour of art center today... that place is way more awesome than i was expecting. basically everywhere in that place exudes inspiring art, and not just "pretty things," but things with solid and well thought out concepts that can be applied to the real world. great galleries, crazy machines that allow you to work with almost any kind of material (they even have a materials lab where you can look through swatches of different kinds of acrylic, metals, woods, etc. etc.), a huge art library, suuUUUUper interesting classes and subject matter and projects, etc. etc. etc. and such a cool campus/facility. but the greatest part was just the atmosphere of the place -- people there seem to be in a constant cycle of inspiring and being inspired, creating and critiquing, improving and to use a cliche, really "thinking outside the box." it seems like a place that i'd really excel in.. more motivation to do well on this portfolio along with the fact that the end of the month is fast approaching. super work time. no excuses. get scholarship. grad school. pls.

apps the second time around

coming up with things to include/make for the portfolio is not hard at all. in fact, it's too easy and i have to pick and choose which to leave in. filling out application and writing essays and etc. is pretty easy too. all the nights of starting essays at 4am, 5 hrs before it's due have paid off i guess hah. but the hard part is actually making the pieces.

granted, the first one i'm working on required a lot of research.. basically understanding how a car works, what parts you can replace with other parts, etc. and understanding the full anatomy of a horse. guess what i'm making? but anyways, that required holing up in the library for a few days and combing some technician's books which took a while. hopefully the other pieces go faster than this first one since they don't require any research. hopefully.

being at a UC made me so lazy... it's unbelievable how hard it is to overcome this. if you compare the me in high school to the me now, what happened? UC happened, where they give you 9 weeks of freedom and 1 week of dying. slowly but surely i'm getting over it, but hopefully by the deadline date... which is in less than half a month now !!

i'll be making a completely entirely fantastically new portfolio for grad apps/job apps, COMPLETELY new... about 7 projects for this month plus freelance game art so i'll be working a LOT every day. pretttyy exciting, got off to a good start for 2011. the old not making sense not cohesive web portfolio i have now will only be up for another month so save my jpgs and title them your own before they're taken down.. just kidding, don't do that.

but jan 31 is the planned completion date.. i have an entire month off from anything and everything so while it is a little hard to think it's okay to not be doing anything for so long with no income, i'll make the best of the 3 weeks+ and get that scholarship

so i did end up working on my own stuff, but it turned out to be in writing form rather than illustration or music. at least for the moment, that's what i'm working on. so sorry there's no real previews or anything. buuut i have been working on final stuff for the painting class i'm taking, and the very last assignment is to do some painting in the style of an internationally recognized artist. so i just picked rembrandt and am painting myself. and ow i look super emo and depressed, prob cause of the rembrandt color palette and also i'm not making any kind of facial expression, but i've been told that my neutral face either looks angry or sad. so i guess it's the sad neutral face. haha

the color's off... thanks to my only camera, the good ol point and shoot. not that i have anything against it, it's just .. a point and shoot.

i still have to do more touchups. and write a paper?!?! and make 15 copies of it?!

wow no updates for a while... still working on the REMIX cranes design, but i'm almost finished with it --hopefully by tomorrow. so many things to do/work on! but surprisingly not very much time at all.. i thought there would be an excess of free time now that i've graduated but it seems to be just the opposite.

all this feels like just another regular summer in between school years, so the "HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW THAT YOU GRADUATED?!?!" doesn't really apply yet. probably will when fall comes around and school starts but i have no school to go to. hopefully by then i will have a full time so i don't have to sit at home watching commercials for bryman college and the general insurance.

i started working full time at an internship in little tokyo. prettty cool.
now that i have no more homework/projects/finals/taiko practices/events i have to go to, what do i do with my time.......... weird.

verry strange being done... everything feels the same, just like any quarter when i finish finals before everyone else and have nothing to do after. but this time i have to remind myself there won't be any more finals.. ever . again. at least, unless i go to grad school or something. but grad school is $$$ and finding a full time job comes before that, although finding anything is harder than finding a ring in the sand on a giant beach with an old metal detector.

i'm still really tired from last week's finals. guess i haven't recovered yet. and i am getting sick?!? graduation is this weekend, i can't be sick.

i got some anatomy studies books and "animals in motion" by muybridge so i'm pretty excited to start doing my own personal work now.. once i am not so tired. there's still a bunch of misc things to do/go to so even though i'm done with finals things are still busy.

tomorrow's my last day of work at asucla marketing. kinda weird. i've been there for about 4 years and now i'm not anymore. at least my office account finally let me login after not working for a year.

i suppose i should sleep so i'm not late to my very last day.

animation test for the run and takeoff scene for class... i don't know why all my youtube videos get messed up in the beginning.. i'm still working on the moving background version since it's not due till.. june. haha but the creature motion is cool -the movement is from the horse and turkey vulture. this took a while - 4 days of super intense nonstop animating, staring at a screen literally all day - since i wanted to make sure the movement was correct. there's still some things to tweak but overall it's all right.

JA Experience final was okay. i should have read more articles since all the multiple choice were pretty hard when they shouldn't have been. i forgot i needed a bluebook for the exam so i ended up running across campus to buy one then running back, but not in anywhere near the shape i used to be. it was like a bad movie.

wow, soo bad on the updates... i've just been working nonstop on animation for animation class and design gaming. jeez gaming takes up so much time it's ridiculous.. each character in the game can move in 8 directions, and each direction requires 5 frames of drawn animation per action, and there's something like 3 actions? 3x5x8 drawings for 1 character. and there are...... 7 characters?!?! 3x5x8x7.. i'm as far north campus as it gets but i still know that is insane amount of drawings. and that's not even getting into the real animation class for the film school whoa.

i need to update my portfolio so i can start applying for jobs-- aah scary! but i have no time right now.. at least finals will be done in 2 weeks so i guess i can start then. and i need to figure out this php site mess. and hmm it would be nice to paint again.

some sketches for the video game i'm developing in 157B (design gaming). it's transforming this idea i had for a novel into a game, "ulysses." basically, it's animals combined with machines and weapons used for war, with computer chip AI planted in their brains. it's a first person? rpg (still haven't figured out what exactly it's going to look like).

but really, i haven't had very much time for anything... getting a little behind (a lot) in my classes. THE SHOW IS ON MONDAY!! it's coming up so fast... this weekend is going to be really busy though, practice every day for almost 12 hours each time. but i'm looking forward to it, it's such a lot of funnnn

tahoe was marvelous super fun super beautiful! the waking up at 5am after going to sleep at 3am the night before the drive was extremely deathly but the rest of the trip was great

there was some really nice snow falling while we were driving down the tahoe mountain, which turned into crazy heavy rain going into sacramento. and now it's going to rain for the entire week down here in la whoa

anyway, ill upload some pics when i get my camera usb cord..

the internet is sucking away my life again. things were actually much better when all i had was netzero so i didn't just look at useless things the whole night. i realized that there are only maybe 10 minutes of time spent usefully on the internet, and after that becomes checking websites that you know aren't updated since the last time you checked 3 minutes ago and nosing around other peoples' business. what a was-tay

anyway, trying to come up with a nice flyer ad for the CN that i wrote my script for. i wanted a cool vintage produce crate label thing but so far i'm not really liking the designs. and the tshirt design too. still more work to be done............. so much. why is graphic design so painful

this is actually just the old "canis major" pic combined with "apus" and "volans" and mixed together with a bunch of other things. i was going to submit it to a show but then decided it wasn't really that great and then ran out of time to submit anything.

i compared this image to the one on my computer and the colors are definitely different. much more washed out looking......... awesome blogspot

today i was going to cook food that i had just gotten from the grocery store and found out our stove has no gas. the flame just shrank away and now the whole thing doesn't work anymore. i hope our line hasn't been shut off.

WINTER BREAK was much too short. seriously. what did i do in the near total absence of internet... watched fantastic mr. fox (which was really really good), avatar in 3d (which was also very good), drank lots of boba, played lots of tetris, read lots of "Starting Point" by hayao miyazaki (very highly recommended), painted a little, tableted a little, FINISHED MY SCRIPT yesssssssss. yeah, a bunch of other things. but those were the most monumental i guess. christmas was very good, new years was very good - got to eat lots of good traditional japanese foods yum

but it was nice. what a short break... now it's back to school. this time i've got a japanese american studies class, a design gaming pt 2 class (this time it's actual video games, not board games), and an advanced animation class that is probably going to destroy me later. but it'll be a fun destroying. so from now until president's day i'm going to have late class 7-10pm, taiko practices, drama practices, cn meetings etc etc etc. Busy busy. But it'll be worth it in the end. Just hope I don't die before I get there.

anyways, here are some things i did over break. just three??! just showing three for now..

this was a gift for a friend... it was really hard to photograph so it came out all dark, but it's supposed to be the ocean at night with some clouds and the stars- what i saw when i drove down pch one time on a nice night drive after it rained. or was it in the middle of the rain when it cleared for a little. i don't remember.

so now fall quarter is officially over. how was it? it was okay.. 3d and gaming started off pretty nicely and went full on until the very end when things got way too rushed and all the work i (and we) did wasn't really given very much time at all to be viewed. and my last two games didn't even get played! wtf. kind of disappointing but at least i learned how to use maya and there is gaming 2 next quarter. animation was super fun, that's going to be going on next quarter + spring also. this time i'll actually use the lightboxes instead of sitting in my room with my lamp by myself.

but now that i have time this winter break, i can finally finish up the cn script and do some arts!! can't wait to paint/photoshop/painter x/render maya things.

aaaand there is a artist speaker event tonight at JANM in jtown by my most favorite illustrator james jean. whoa i'm really looking forward to that.

and really looking forward to christmas stuff and shopping and being around friends + family. aaah this break is going to be good.

since i'll be at home mostly, i probably won't be updating very much seeing how i still have caveman 28k internet at home. but i might here and there. happy holidays!
